The reddening of leaves in F1 hybrids of cotton after about 110 days after planting when the crop bears a heavy load of bolls was due to lowered nitrogen content. The hybrid Varalaxmi did not appear to maintain its nitrogen balance and suffered from red leaf with consequent decrease in the yield of seed cotton whereas under similar conditions the other hybrids H.64 and H.134 (also characterised with high degree of heterosis for yield) remained green with adequate N content in their leaves. It is proposed that 1.5% N in leaves may be taken as “critical concentration”; for N deficiency in cotton. The reduced Mg content of affected leaves did not appear to be associated with reddening. |
