This essay argues for a theory of “reading” which equates the ways viewers make sense of televisual texts with the ways they make sense of social experience in general. Examining TV quiz shows, it isolates the four main discourses of quiz shows—capitalist economics, education, sex, and gambling—and relates those discourses to class structures in society. |
