COMPUTERIZED ANALYSIS OF BLOOD-GAS EQUILIBRIA Part I CO2 Titration of Oxygenated Whole Blood

Title: COMPUTERIZED ANALYSIS OF BLOOD-GAS EQUILIBRIA Part I CO2 Titration of Oxygenated Whole Blood
Author: Meldon, Jerry H.
Appeared in: Chemical engineering communications
Paging: Volume 27 (1984) nr. 3-4 pages 157-172
Year: 1984-05-01
Contents: Carbon dioxide-induced changes in the acid-base status of oxygenated whole blood are analyzed using fundamental physiochemical constraints and equilibrium data. Emphasis is placed on the influences of red cell 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (DPG) and osmosis upon pH. The ratio of CO2induced hematocrit and plasma pH changes in normal blood is found to be -0.03, in agreement with the literature value. Changes in pH due to CO2 also agree with published data. The [DPG]-dependence of hematocrit and pH changes is calculated to be very small. Neglect of hematocrit changes introduces only slight error in the calculation of pH changes.
