An earlier article (see Changing English 7:1, Burgess, Turvey and Quarshie) described work with trainee teachers of English. Students' understanding of language issues, particularly grammar, was the focus of this research. As the trainees move into schools and engage with curriculum requirements and with the needs and interests of pupils, their subject knowledge is developed and transformed in ways which are the subject of this follow-up article. The author looks in some detail at the approach to grammar and grammar teaching which is taken in university sessions and then at the trainees' responses to this as they attempt to develop their own and their pupils' understanding. Interviews with the trainees, excerpts from their journals and descriptions of classroom practice offer encouraging insights into a learning process which is made more complex and problematic than public rhetoric about grammar would suggest. |
