Inhoud: Biological time series which cannot be obtained by automatic recording techniques, especially in the case of biochemical data, are often relatively short and contain only a few datapoints at temporal distances in the range of many minutes or even several hours. In complicated biochemical or cell biological procedures, single datapoints can afterwards turn out to be affected by a technical error, leading to the neeessitiy of discarding such a point and to a disturbance of the equidistantly sampled data. For these reasons, the available repertory of elaborate and elegant methods of time series statistics, such as Fourier or autocorrelation analyses, are often not applicable. However, even when data are not equidistantly sampled fitting of either one or more cosines or of a non-sinusoidal function can still provide information on period length and statistical significance. On the basis of an example from the ultradian rhythm of tyrosine aminotransferase in Euglena, several variations of fitting together with their advantages and limits are presented.
