Inhoud: The minute-range up and down movements of the lateral leaflets of Desmodium gyrans have been studied after exposure to pulses of DC current. The current was applied to the tip of the leaflet via a copper thread and passed through the pulvinus area and the stalk down to ground potential at an electrode in the medium. The currents used were below 100 μA. and the pulses were applied for up to about 10 seconds. Small current pulses could phase shift the rhythm; only delays were observed. Larger current pulses affected the period and the amplitude. Current pulses above about 10 μA (mean current) caused an effect on the period. The period increased by 10% for a mean current of approximately 35 μA. The amplitude decreased as a function of the current applied; the damping was about 50% for a pulse of 15 μA (mean current) applied for 5 s. Current pulses could also stop the rhythm for up to about 90 min. This could be achieved with e.g. 20 μA (max current) for 10 s. The pulses used to achieve this arrhythmic state (a so-called singular state) were usually applied in the bottom position of the movement. The oscillations restarted spontaneously (without any known changes in the outside conditions). The system was therefore not irreversibly damaged by the current pulses.
