Essential performances of the brain such as reception, short-term storage and reproduction of information was dealt with as a function of time. The errors in the reproduction of presented sequences of numbers, in the corresponding computed correlation functions, displayed autonomie oscillations of brain performance; the frequency distribution showed a clear maximum with a period of 2.2 min. The oscillations were not triggered by the temporal stimulus pattern nor significantly affected by alcohol, caffeine and neuroton (tranquilizer). The reaction times to mixed light and sound signals, which were given in regular or stochastic sequences, exhibit periods of the same type as in the oscillations of the short-term memory. In a combined examination of the short-term memory and the times of reaction to light or sound signals, a comparison of the individual auto-correlation functions and the results of cross-correlation functions showed a coordination between the oscillations. |
