Inhoud: This work explores a method of estimating the relative available soil moisture (RAM) to support plant growth. This method is used as a means of determining land capability from the annual primary productivity that a parcel of land can support. The method determines the RAM in a multiplicative parametric fashion from rainfall plus the contribution due to groundwater, soil depth, texture, slope, and salinity. The primary annual net productivity calculated using these considerations gives reasonable agreement with measured values. This result gives confidence that estimates of land capability in similar environments can be made using the method. The measured values of primary annual net productivity in the region are as follows: foothills 750-836, top and middle of alluvial fans 380-400, bottom of alluvial fans 650-1200, saline alluvial plain 750-965, and sand dunes 250 kg ha-1 yr-1. Comparison between the measured and calculated potential biomass production suggests that the foothills are producing at 90%, top and middle of the alluvial fans 50%, bottom of alluvial fans 100%, saline alluvial plain 100%, and sand dunes 100% of their ecological potential.
