The grassland in the culture landscape between yesterday and tomorrow

Title: The grassland in the culture landscape between yesterday and tomorrow
Author: Schalitz, Gisbert
Appeared in: Archives of agronomy & soil science
Paging: Volume 50 (2004) nr. 2 pages 149-159
Year: 2004-04
Contents: The grassland has developed as an important landscape element in the frame of human land use, where a change of use to agriculture is not sensible, on account of its extensive use for centuries as a refuge for important species of flora and fauna. From the farmer's view the grassland built the fodder base for animal production and was the source of additional agricultural organic substance. Intensification in the 20th century has clearly led to negative influence to the site (biotop) conditions, species purity, eutrophication and disturbances in the cycles of ecosystems. The return to a more natural state (renaturation of grassland) is an urgent necessity, on the one side is the preservation of ecosystems, but also to recover the grassland as a recreation facility for the modern human, living in an estranged working world and more and more having regard for nature.
