Contents: In this article, we present a case-based-reasoning approach for the solution of complex manufacturing problems. We describe an application of this methodology to the development of an automated system for weld-process design. We also describe the generic system design and implementation of a Weld-Process Design Advisor (WPDA). The uniqueness of this system is that it combines case-based and heuristic rule-based reasoning methods with analytic models of the problem domain.
