Inhoud: This study investigated the role of the situation in the appraisal and coping processes of a sample of 84 college football players. The athletes' appraisals and coping behavior were assessed in both an academically and athletically stressful situation using a modified version of the Ways of Coping scale. The athletes appraised the academic situation as being more relevant to the needs of their loved one and the athletic as being more relevant to dimensions of their self-concepts. No situational differences in secondary appraisal were found. With respect to coping, the athletes used more accepting responsibility, escape-avoidance, and social support coping strategies in the academic situation. An analysis comparing situational differences in coping, controlling for appraisals, provided modest evidence that some of the impact of the objective situation is captured in the transactional construct of appraisal. The findings of the present study are discussed with respects to its implications for future stress and coping research.
