Contents: The silylation of hydroxysteroids has been studied with different silylating reagents, and under non-catalyzed and catalyzed conditions. When BSA alone is used (non-catalyzed reaction), TMSi ether formation does not occur for 11β- and tert-17α-hydroxyl groups. When BSA-TMCS is used (catalyzed reaction), 11β-hydroxyl groups are converted to-TMSi ethers, and tert-17α-hydroxyl groups of the THE-THF series will also react. Complete silylation of all hydroxyl groups for compounds of the cortol series may be effected with TSIM-BSA-TMCS at 60° C.
