This article examines the Lost Cause movement as a literary genre. To better understand how Southerners have written about and understood the American Civil War, the writings of three former Confederate soldiers, Richard Taylor, John Bell Hood, and Will Tunnard have been placed in an epistemological context. Taylor's writings are heavily influenced by the Great Man theory of history, Hood's are steeped in the doctrines of Swiss Jurist Emerich de Vattel, and Tunnard represents the war realist school. Despite their unique perspectives, all three writers fall within the broad definitions of the Enlightenment and Romantic movements.
