A Part or Apart: The Alleged Isolation of Antebellum U.S. Army Officers

Titel: A Part or Apart: The Alleged Isolation of Antebellum U.S. Army Officers
Auteur: Wettemann, Robert P.
Verschenen in: American nineteenth century history
Paginering: Jaargang 7 (2006) nr. 2 pagina's 193-217
Jaar: 2006-06-01
Inhoud: Following passage of the 1824 General Survey Act, numerous U.S. Army officers made use of their West Point engineering education to advance the transportation revolution. Ensuing contact between officers employed on loosely defined 'national' internal improvements projects and American society generated criticism of both officers and the U.S. Military Academy by Jacksonian Democrats. Advocating egalitarian principles, Democrats saw military assistance on state and private civil works as an unfair extension of federal privilege and sought a repeal of the Survey Act and a redefinition of the military mission. After 1838 officers were expected to serve with troops in the field and limit their work on transportation projects, terms which gradually led to increased military isolation from civilian society.
