A Two-Phase Algorithm for the Maintenance of a Deteriorating Component System

Title: A Two-Phase Algorithm for the Maintenance of a Deteriorating Component System
Author: Brown, D. B.

Year: 1970-06-01
Contents: Given component costs and component deterioration distributions, the algorithm describes which components should be replaced at discrete time intervals so that the system will operate at lowest, or nearly lowest, expected cost. Component replacement costs are traded against system inefficiency costs. The algorithm takes into account that all past decisions affect the probability distributions and immediate costs. The two-phase algorithm consists of a parameter generation phase and a dynamic programming phase. Decisions are based upon the state of the system so that components need not be monitored. The algorithm is verified by an independent simulation.
