This study investigates the effect of selected output response patterns and cost structures on optimal standard levels. Worker responses to the standard pace are hypothesized and these response patterns utilized to develop the relationship between the standard-pace and average-unit costs. If worker output variation and the nonwage costs influenced by productivity are low, the optimal standard level is found near the point on the response curve at which output equals the standard level. As output variation and nonwage costs are assumed to increase, the optimal standard pace is lowered. Other important factors influencing the optimal standard level are the assumed position of the response curve and the nonincentive output rate. |
