When demand is less than plant capacity, production must be reduced or inventories will build. One method for matching production with demand is to throttle production at a rate equal to demand. Another production control method is to run production lines at capacity and periodically shut down one or more lines. This paper develops optimal production strategies for plants with identical production lines, each of which has a minimum operable production rate. |
