Inhoud: This paper considers the problem of finding the optimum schedule for the production of H shafts of diameter within specified tolerance limit(s). It is assumed that the diameter is a normally distributed variable that exhibits a non-negative shift in both the process mean and variance. Two cases are considered: (1) when H is infinite-a continuous production situation, and (2) when H is finite. In the first case, the problem reduces to finding the run size that minimizes the per unit cost of an acceptable shaft. The second case may be formulated as a knapsack problem. Its solution involves determining the optimal run size(s), as well as the specific number of runs of each size required to produce an expected number, at least as large as H, of acceptable shafts at minimum cost. Solution algorithms are provided for both cases and computation experience is reported.
