Contents: This paper describes research on the applicability of Monte Carlo simulation to the study of large-scale power system reliability. Reliability in this context refers to the ability of the system to meet demand for electricity over time. A generalized program capable of modeling any pool of generators was developed using a modified version of the GASP-IV simulation language. The logic of this program is described, and the results of two applications of the program are presented. This research represents extension of previous models by: (1) modeling operating constraints in greater detail and (2) a major reduction in computational effort required by the model.
